The BJJ Black Belt: Responsibility (Part 2)

In our previous blog post, we delved into the dual role of the BJJ black belt: as both a perpetual learner and a dedicated teacher. This article explores a crucial third aspect:

Responsibility to Model Character and Excellence: In life, our actions are either aligned with integrity or veer off course, each path leading to its own set of consequences. But here's the thing: through our everyday habits, we're not just shaping ourselves; we're influencing others and setting the course of our lives. Therefore, it's imperative that leaders, including black belts on the mat, exemplify commendable character and mastery of their craft. These traits are not innate; they require a conscious decision to pursue and consistent effort to attain.

"Do you see someone skilled in their work? They will serve before kings; they will not serve before officials of low rank." – Proverbs 22:29

We learn best by observing positive examples rather than just being told what not to do. By having role models who demonstrate the path and walk it with integrity, we're provided with a blueprint to follow and a standard to aspire to. The life of Jesus, as outlined in the four Gospels of the Bible, serves as an excellent reference point.

Good character manifests through qualities such as dependability, honesty, integrity, humility, and respect. Without dependability and respect, trust cannot flourish, and credibility wanes. It takes humility to remain open to learning and improving regardless of the circumstances or the source of instruction. Leading with authenticity requires vulnerability and honesty.

Moreover, everyone on the mat must demonstrate and execute proper technique, demeanor, and understanding according to their ability at any given moment. Therefore, the expectations for a black belt are even higher.

"For everyone to whom much is given, from him much will be required; and to whom much has been committed, of him they will ask the more." – Luke 12:48b

BJJ black belts rightfully uphold higher standards and honor. With this honor comes greater accountability and influence. The journey toward the black belt should be approached with deliberate preparation for the elevated responsibilities it entails.

By striving for consistency in attending training sessions and executing proper techniques, we cultivate excellence and reflect commendable character. These qualities permeate other areas of our lives and positively impact the mat culture around us, positioning us to achieve more.

Life and time on the mat impart valuable lessons, particularly when we prioritize technique over brute strength or attempt to cut corners.

"Whoever walks in integrity will be delivered, but he who is perverse in his ways will suddenly fall." – Proverbs 28:18

Furthermore, good intentions alone, without accompanying skill, often lead to unfavorable outcomes. Proverbs 19:2 emphasizes that zeal without knowledge is destructive.

There's no escaping the fact that we are constantly teaching and learning, either the right way or the wrong way. Therefore, let's aim for upright character and a technically proficient game. The black belt is within reach as we transcend our circumstances by keeping our overarching goals in sight.

LEARN continually, TEACH technique, MODEL character.
